What can we learn from the history of innovation?

It took decades of careful experimentation to create a practical electric light bulb.  It took just one accidental observation to inspire the microwave oven.

A PhD research team developed the transistor in their corporate laboratory.  College dropouts started Apple Computers in their garage.

Mother Neccessity inspired a number of simple and profitable innovations, such as Q-Tips and BandAids.  Koosh Balls and Rubik's Cubes, while also simple and profitable, certainly did not fulfill any dire need.

The stories behind many well-known innovations are as varied as the products themselves.  What ties them all together?

     Someone had a great idea.

     That idea was made to work.

     There was a market for the result.
